건축가 애니 배럿(Annie Barrett)과 정혜영(Hye-Young Chung)은 로스엔젤레스에 위치한 스페인 스타일의 하우스를 완전히 바꿔 센터링 홈(Centered home)을 탄생시켰다. 하우스의 입구를 채우는 산 페드로 선인장은 사계절 변치 않는 푸르름을 선사하며, 사용자에게 독특한 주변 경관을 선물한다. 하우스는 독립적인 개인 공간과 활기찬 공용 공간이 적절한 균형을 이루며, 라이프스타일에 맞게 나눠진 집안 구조는 클라이언트의 생활 경험을 향상시킨다.

내부 공간은 전체적으로 클라이언트가 원하는 화이트 톤의 맞춤형 텍스처와 디테일로 구성돼 은은한 촉감과 밝은 생활공간으로 연출했다. 석고로 마감된 벽과 천장은 빛에 반응해 내부에 밝은 분위기를 조성하고 공간에 활기를 부여한다. 또한 천장의 창문은 집안으로 채광을 유입해 공간에 빛을 더 깊게 들이고, 외부 풍경을 프레임화하여 자연적인 인테리어 효과를 만들어낸다.

센터링 홈은 부부의 특별한 삶의 방식과 관심사에 맞게 설계됐다. 부부의 은퇴 후 삶을 위해 의뢰된 프로젝트인 만큼, 단순히 노후생활을 보내기 위함이 아닌 삶의 2막을 알리는 수단이 되고자 했다. 또한 이
하우스를 완성하기 위해 협력한 클라이언트, 디자이너들의 노력은 3,000마일이 넘는 먼 거리를 뛰어넘었다. 프로젝트에 참여한 모두가 시차를 잊고 끊임없는 대화와 아이디어를 주고 받았으며, 세부적인 디테일까지 놓치지 않는 협력이 있었기에 더욱 의미 있는 센터링 홈이 완성될 수 있었다.

Centered Home marks a long, deeply collaborative process between the architects, who run individual firms on opposite coasts, and the homeowners, who are passionate lovers of design and art with impeccable, exacting attention to detail. The home facilitates the owners’ aspiration to approach their future ‘expansively, intentionally, and with curiosity,’ says Barrett. Approaching Centered Home from the street, a dense screen of San Pedro cacti makes way for a minimalist rectilinear form clad in charred shou sugi ban rainscreen siding, standing in contrast to the landscape’s polychromatic lushness. Informed by a balance of meditative solitude and exuberant communal living, the home is designed as a series of nested conditions organized concentrically.

Like Centered Home’s interior, outdoor spaces are honed to the couple’s particular way of life and interests. ‘The project was commissioned in anticipation of the couple’s semi-retirement, and they approached the design process less as a means towards an end and more as an opportunity to deeply consider how their constructed environment would participate in shaping ‘phase two’ of their life,’ says Chung of the project.
